Computer Systems Engineer – Software Development (Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments-Tropics) – 81037

Organization:  ES-Earth Sciences

Position Summary:

This Computer Systems Engineer – Software Development position will be responsible for the software development and computational implementation of a range of land modeling activities for the project Next Generation Ecosystem Experiments-Tropics (NGEE-Tropics). Under general supervision, the engineer will work collaboratively with scientists developing, testing, and maintaining a model based on the community land model (CLM), as implemented in CESM (Community Earth System Model) and ACME (Accelerated Climate Model for Energy) and other land models. The engineer will be responsible for managing the design, implementation, testing, and integration of improvements to the land model for the NGEE Tropics project. He/she will also provide hands-on software development and application support to the entire NGEE Tropics project, including collaborators at other national laboratories, the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR), Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute, and US Forest Service.

Specific Responsibilities:

• Integration, testing and development of CLM(ED), which includes a representation of Ecosystem Demography (ED) into CLM for disaggregating vegetation into size- and age- structures

• Development of a set of pan-tropical model testbeds, in which the land model will be forced with site-specific input data and benchmarked against multiple heterogeneous site-level observations to assess model fidelity across multiple tropical field sites

• Coordination of multiple mechanistic developments in the model, including: processes relating to hydrologic cycle; surface-atmosphere exchange of water, energy and light; soil-plant exchange of nutrients and water; representation of environmental controls on plant life-history trajectories; and coupling between vegetation and hydrologic models at multiple scales

• Software integration between NGEE Tropics and other projects such as CESM and ACME.

In addition to the above, the specific responsibilities for the Computer Systems Engineer – Software Development 3:

• Work at a higher level of independence and responsibilities in carrying out assignments.

• Develop and implement computational methods to improve the capabilities and output of the group.

• Troubleshoot more complex systems and data analysis problems.

Required Qualifications:

• B.S. in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a relevant scientific discipline with experience developing land models, with minimum of 2 years experience.

• Ability to work with FORTRAN

• Ability to work with Unix and Python scripting

• Ability to work creatively and independently to develop software that addresses land model needs over the next decade, which may include substantial changes to the current model structure

• Knowledge of visualization and analysis software packages to facilitate software development

• Ability to work in an integrated team environment.

Additional desired qualifications:

• Demonstrated experience in providing support for software solutions.

• Experience working with scientific users.

In addition to the above, the required qualifications for the Computer Systems Engineer – Software Development 3:

• B.S. with 5 years of experience or an M.S. with 3 years of experience, or equivalent experience, in Computer Science of Computer Engineering or a relevant scientific discipline with experience developing land models. M.S. degree is preferred.

• Ability to troubleshoot complex systems and data analysis problems.

The posting shall remain open until the position is filled, however for full consideration, please apply by June 25, 2015.

Notes:  This is a career appointment.  Classification will depend upon the applicant’s level of skills, knowledge, and abilities.

This position requires completion of a background check.
